Dear Editor,
With the United States presidential election behind us and President-elect Donald Trump having executed an upset against the heavily favoured Hillary Clinton, the sky has not fallen or the sun stop shinning. Still there are protests and a few people out rioting in the the streets because some are still in shock about the election results and seem not to want to accept them.
This is a great lesson for all of us to prepare ourselves for any outcome.
As the media and pollsters analyse the reasons for the upset of Clinton, many answers will come to the fore. Some will say poor whites in the rust states were voting to get jobs back, others will blame the Federal Bureau of Investigation for the loss. However, there is a major point that caused the defeat of Hillary Clinton which is not getting a lot of recognition. There are 92 million evangelical Christians in the United States; Trump got 81 per cent of the evangelical votes. If 50 per cent of all evangelicals voted, then approximately 32 million evangelicals voted for Donald Trump. Why did they vote for Trump?
The truth is they did not vote for Trump, but voted against some of Barack Obama’s policies that were in direct conflict with their faith. It is not up for debate in the evangelical community the issue of same- sex marriage. Obama had the White House lit up in the rainbow colours on the night the Supreme Court passed the law on 5-4 vote. Also, he was a vigorous campaigner to make it a human rights issue. This was like Antiochus IV Epiphanes sacrificing a pig in the Jewish temple. Another issue that is dear to evangelicals is abortion. When babies are being aborted because a woman has the right to eliminate that life, it is heart-rending because all lives are sacred.
Hillary ran on the vision of continuing Obama’s third term to secure his legacy. The silent majority of evangelical Christians have spoken.
