Dear Editor,
I disagree with Robert Dalley’s letter to the editor in the Jamaica Observer calling on Portia Simpson Miller to apologise to the nation for saying the following at a People’s National Party meeting held in Claremont, St Ann, some days ago: “I represent one of the strongest constituencies in Jamaica; don’t play with me. I don’t play games. I work hard for this movement from 1974 ‘til now, nuh boy, nuh gyal can’t talk to me… I will come back here for another meeting and I know who I will bring...” What is wrong with that statement, Robert Dalley? Hasn’t she worked tirelessly for the past five decades for the party that she presently leads? She is due much respect from all party supporters and nothing is wrong with her utterances.
Further, Simpson Miller was obviously referring to bringing back her supporters from her constituency to St Ann South Eastern, to show the significant political support that she has across her constituency of St Andrew South Western.
Dalley and Minister Daryl Vaz are being hypocritical and ridiculous in requesting that Simpson Miller apologises for her statements as quoted above in this letter. There is nothing wrong with her statement at the political rally held in St Ann, in Lisa Hanna’s constituency, and Dalley and Vaz are playing politics and making an issue when there is none.
Some people criticise regularly the president of the party, Portia Simpson Miller, because she has risen up from poverty and has attained one of the highest offices in the land on two separate occasions as prime minister and now as Opposition leader. It is really political dishonesty and hypocrisy at play now.
There’s no need to apologise, Simpson Miller.
A point of note, I have never read a letter from Robert Dalley or Daryl Vaz congratulating Simpson Miller on her significant achievements as a politician and as prime minister during the time that she served. Why, may I ask here?
