Uniforms are beneficial and professional

Dear Editor,

So many people wear uniforms now. The official uniformed groups are noted for the cleanliness and sparkle of well-ironed, crisp and nice uniforms which give the needed atmosphere of discipline, self-control and conformity. There are groups such as the police, soldiers, security guards, cadets, girl guides, rangers, scouts, and brownies.

We also have the overwhelming cadre of schools stipulating uniform, with the accompanying distinctions and respect accorded to different levels of students, resembling only somewhat the way in which we have ranked uniform within the armed forces.

Order and finesse are suggested by the wearing of uniform in workplaces too. We sometimes have bankers and nurses and some teachers in uniform. In the medical field, doctors often wear a white jacket or top.

Wearing uniform is less costly and more professional. It also helps to decrease polarisation or extremes between those who are well dressed, the very properly dressed, and those of us who cannot afford the increasingly expensive clothes. I am not at all saying that everyone should wear uniforms because then we would all be photocopies of each other.

However, you will find that there is more freedom to wear plainclothes on Friday. I wish to say to everyone in uniform, including students, that only positive, disciplined, correct, and controlled behaviour is expected of you. Kudos to those who work in the garment industry, you sew so expertly for everyone.
