An appeal to Minister Bunting

Dear Editor,

The brutal murder last week of police constable Crystal Thomas, who was assigned to the Denham Town Police Station in Kingston, has rightly shocked the entire country and the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF).

The United States Ambassador to Jamaica, His Excellency Luis Moreno, has publicly condemned that vicious, despicable and shameful murder of Constable Thomas, and has given his full support to the JCF. This is commendable and shows the concern that he and his staff have for the police force and, by extension, the entire country.

The murder of this young, promising and hard-working police constable by gunmen shows that there are some barbaric and downright evil criminals in Jamaica carrying out their nefarious crimes with impunity.

The police have reported that three suspects have been taken into custody, and if those persons are in fact responsible for the callous murder of the police constable, then they must be brought before the courts to face the full extent of the law. I do hope that the law will take its course in this respect, for this murder has really been most fiendish, abominable and senseless in every respect.

The chairman of the Police Federation, the outspoken Sergeant Raymond Wilson, while speaking on the Nationwide News Network evening current affairs programme, enunciated that it was of paramount necessity that the Government proceed to purchase and assign some buses to police divisions within the Kingston, St Andrew and St Catherine areas so that officers departing from late-hour shifts can be transported home.

Instructively, he pointed out as well that in previous years, going back to 2006, some buses were in fact purchased and assigned to some police divisions, principally to be utilised for the transporting of police officers who were leaving their respective shifts during night hours.

As a concerned member of the public I am imploring National Security Minister Peter Bunting to ensure that some new buses are purchased for police working in high-risk areas and use those buses during night hours to take police officers home.

The police have a most difficult job to perform daily and they certainly need the full support of the citizens and Government.

I extend condolence to the family of Constable Thomas, and also to the family of Constable Curtis Lewis, who was mowed down last week Monday by a motorcyclist in Sheffield, Westmoreland.
