Dear Editor,
I would like to make a suggestion to the Government of Jamaica that the statue of the unknown athlete presently erected at the entrance of the National Stadium, Independence Park complex be removed and relocated.
A statue of the most popular man in Jamaica, Usain St Leo Bolt, should be mounted on the same site.
The statue of the unknown athlete was built and mounted at the National Stadium while former great Jamaican athletes were alive and well, among them George Rhoden, Herb McKenley, Leslie Laing, and Arthur Wint who brought Jamaica fame and glory in the 1952 Helsinki Summer Olympics in Finland. What about George Kerr, Donald Quarrie and Merlene Ottey?
I figure that the erection of the statue of the unknown athlete was erected because of financial constraints, and that it would have been difficult to single out any one of the abovementioned athletes to create a statue as they all performed exceptionally well in their time.
Usain St Leo Bolt has outperformed, outdone, and outshines all the athletes mentioned above, and is in a class by himself.
Just like the Bob Marley statue erected in Independence Park, tourists would come to take photographs and this would help to enhance our tourism product. Visitors could be asked to make a small contribution to help the Tourism Enhancement Fund to maintain the statues. This should be the start of other things to come.
The statue of the unknown athlete should be relocated to the Trelawny Multi-purpose Stadium or the G C Foster College of Physical Education and Sports.
