Dear Editor,
I watched with interest the CNN Heroes honouring 10 deserving recipients.
These included an undercover doctor, a pastor-turned-produce grower, and a war veteran using hike therapy, among others.
The winner, Maggie Doyne, relocated and took US$5,000 earned in babysitting to build the Kopila Valley Children’s Home in Nepal.
Reading from Joshua 23: 10 of the Bible, it states: “One man shall chase a thousand...” Yes, the power of one is real, effecting positive change.
In my pastor’s sermon from Isaiah 60, the light of Christ should be used to shine through the darkness. These two themes juxtaposed are responsible for creating everyday heroes.
My perpetual heroes are my parents. However, my Jamaican hero of 2015 is none other than Dr Alfred Dawes, who was bold and courageous in speaking out. The Bahamian health sector is now the beneficiary of this brilliant surgeon.
We must never underestimate the power of one, and we should endeavour to be lights in this world of sin, decay and social injustice.
