Highway success!

I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate this Government for its continued stewardship of the nation’s highway system, following up on the initial plans of the former Prime Minister P J Patterson. Patterson must be commended for his foresight then of our highway network and today that east west corridor is fittingly named in his honour.

With the unrepentant continuance of the project by Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller and the North-South leg of the highway nearing completion, which goes through St Catherine, the parish of her birth, I am recommending that this leg of the highway be named the Portia Simpson Miller Highway in her honour.

The most recent announcement of the planned extension and construction of the south coast highway connecting Harbour View with Morant Bay and extending further to Port Antonio, Portland, is exciting news to the residents of these parishes in particular, and to Jamaicans generally. These two legs would almost complete the encirclement of our island with a First World highway system and open all our rural parishes to greater development.

National Hero Paul Bogle is my recommended honoree in the naming of the Harbour View to Morant Bay leg and in addition to this, the leg to Portland should be named in honour of Nanny of the Maroons, our only heroine, whose courage we sought in our fight for self-governance.

I wish to encourage the Government not to stop its highway programme and give consideration to opening up the roadway from Manor Park, St Andrew, to Annotto Bay, St Mary (Junction), putting our farmers and farmlands within arm’s length of the main population areas.

China Harbour Engineering Company has worked on the recent highways and are slated to construct the new ones have proven that they are capable partners to handle large projects so this upgrade should pose them no issue.

Since the beginning of this highway project, the country has seen tremendous development in its allowing of easy access to key areas of the island and we must not stop until it’s fully completed.
