Louis’ final bow

Dear Editor,

I have elected to use this medium to thank all those who played supporting roles on the stage of life where Louis Marriott, as chief cast member, performed with honesty and a generosity of spirit.

He believed in self-reliance and lifelong learning and would constantly encourage those around him to claim success through creativity, productivity and precision. In fact, Louis was so precise that he had bypassed any summons to bow out before his birthday in May, and therefore took his final curtain call on August 1 — Emancipation Day.

Louis dearly loved Jamaica and certainly worked in every way he could to promote the credo, “Wi likkle but wi talawah.”

From his new vantage point, the once ardent sports enthusiast may be taking time out to applaud team Jamaica during the 2016 Olympic Games in Brazil.

It is really not difficult to envisage Louis Marriott, Charles Hyatt and Karl Binger — who during their earthly sojourn, became involved with a 1971

BBC production, written by Marriott, entitled The University of Brixton — along with Louise Bennett-Coverley, now ‘running jokes’ in-between cheering on our athletes. I can even hear their jingle:

Run an’ swim an’ jump Jamaica

Show di worl’ yuh talawah!

Louis, me an’ all di addaz

Seh black, green an’ gole

Wi da cheer fah!

Now, the spotlight is on all of us who remain on stage!

Erica Brown Marriott
