We’re on our own

Dear Editor,

There is much ado about the latest International Monetary Fund test, even as I hear that the prices of automotive and other domestic fuel prices are back to where they were last year when the international fuel price was approximately 50 per cent of what it is today.

We, however, are paying the same price as if the cost of fuel had remained at US$100-plus. It seems that the Government has implemented the tax per litre to keep its foot to our necks. I really sympathise with the Administration’s inability to get the economic engine of the country on track.

Fuel is not the only thing that has crept back up to its previous high, as the costs of electricity and water have increased. Of course, there is also the upward creeping cost of goods purchased daily. This is an untenable situation for me because I have nowhere to pass on the increased cost, so I buy less.

The practical solution for us is to grow our own food.

My fellow Jamaicans, it is now apparent that no matter who forms the Government we are on our own. No matter what any politician says, I know that new wealth in this country will never come from those who already have it. Our own new wealth must be created by us. To do that, we must conserve or eliminate unnecessary spending.
