Dear Editor,

I read with great interest an article headlined ‘Thanks for partnering with Broadcasting Commission’, written by Professor Hopeton Dunn, chairman of the Broadcast Commission. I believe the article had substantial and informative content worth mentioning to the wider public.

I congratulate Dunn for giving sterling service for two five-year terms as chairman and an additional eight years as a member of the board.

Significantly, during his tenure as chairman, he has been able to lead a process of substantial reform in a range of areas, including in the rigorous enforcement of content standards for on-air broadcasting quality. He, along with others commissioners, introduced key reforms in the cable sector, moving from the days of unregulated operators to today’s more orderly sector. They have expanded the broadcasting subsector and created a modern and more diverse and competitive electronics media environment in Jamaica.

The august team of commissioners also devised a proposal to promote more funding for independent programme production in Jamaica, and plans for new legislative and technological reform of all sectors.

Dunn had high praises for the outgoing commissioners, and he too deserves commendation.
