Sometimes there are no consequences

Dear Editor,

With the end of the so-called X6 trial with an acquittal of the defendant for murder there has been a lot of talk. In particular, the main witness has been at the receiving end of a lot of anger, with some accusing him of being a double talker, while he himself continues to claim that his statement to the police was reworded.

Whatever the truth of that specific case is, one thing cannot be denied: Sometimes there are no consequences.

Remember that senior government minister who ran over a cyclist some time ago and who managed to have a high-profile lawyer get him to avoid doing any prison time? No consequence.

Remember the FINSAC episode, when a lot of hard-working people ran into a lot of business problems and had all of their assets seized. Some of those who lost everything even lost their sanity. Several high-profile politicians were also caught in that FINSAC debacle, but while their business failures were recognised, there debts weren’t, so to speak. Many of them were allowed to have their slates cleaned and they escaped the fate of so many other ‘FINSACed’ individuals. No consequences.

Then we have the recent grave allegations against a Member of Parliament, which was the focus a

Miami Herald piece. It has fizzled like other nine-day wonders. No consequences.

I suppose that, despite all the pretty speeches, nothing will ever really change in this country. For while all is equal before the law, some are clearly more equal above it.
