Dear Editor,

Last week, People’s National Party (PNP) president and Leader of the Opposition Portia Simpson Miller made the following remarks at a party meeting in St Ann South Eastern, which were published in the Jamaica Observer of Saturday, November 19, 2016: “I represent one of the strongest constituencies in Jamaica; don’t play with me. I don’t play games. I work hard for this movement from 1974 ‘til now, nuh boy, nuh gyal can’t talk to me… I will come back here for another meeting and I know who I will bring...”

The story went on to say: “The PNP leader’s remarks came after some Comrades expressed their disapproval of candidates who had been nominated to represent the party in the November 28 Local Government Election...”

Last Friday on the Nationwide News Network’s main evening newscast, Daryl Vaz called on Simpson Miller to immediately issue a public apology to the country for her unacceptable verbal attack on her fellow Comrades during a political meeting, and to expound on the meaning of those words which she uttered. I fully concur. Her comments are totally out of place, highly controversial and can be interpreted in various negative ways within Jamaica’s heated, colourful and violent political landscape, to put it bluntly. As a responsible party president, she has a profound duty and responsibility to immediately apologise.
